The cruise with a cult following now has its sights on its 5-year anniversary and plans have already been set in motion for another epic instalment of the cruise. Once described by Kes as “the crazy idea that might just work…and it did”, USC is now in its 5th year after completing 2 back to back sold out cruises in November 2019. I stopped by these tournaments very briefly and they were a great change of pace from the parties.

Royal Caribbean offers land excursions at their ports. This time, I decided to do the 2 hour dune buggy ride, organized by Chukka Tours. Though it was a nice opportunity to get out and see a little bit of Grand Turk, it was a subpar experience and I should have caught up on sleep instead. Next year, I will reconsider whether I want to do anything during the morning of J’ouvert. After j’ouvert was sleep time (at last) and Midnight Mas, the event where you wear an old costume or “monday wear” piece to invoke the feeling of mas.

Keevo (Trinidad & Tobago), White Yardie (UK/Jamaica) and Trixx (Canada/Ghana) provided the funny entertainment of the night, and absolutely came with the jokes. I had seen Trixx last year and he was even more hilarious this year. It was great seeing Keevo do stand up because I was only familiar with the 30 second Instagram jokes and sometimes it doesn’t quite translate.

I just want to know if there are any prizes at play for these competitions. Perhaps it is because of where we were seated on floor 4, but I felt like the whole affair was very demure. I heard the entertainment but could not see Johanna Chuckaree perform on the piano; I didn’t see the dancing on the main floor nor did I see the steelpan players. I quickly ate my food, drank some wine, took some pictures and went back to my room to pack. The theme this year was Arabian Nights, with a strong inclusion of Bollywood.
This made for an annoying and uncomfortable experience because of all the feathers and sharp pieces of the costumes. I was at the main Battle Royale event for a very short time - instead I decided to skip the performance-heavy night and rest instead, so that I could fully enjoy the Small Island Party. For this theme, we were encouraged to channel our favorite revolutionary figure or culture of resistance.

I ended up changing after taking pictures and continuing on with my night. The cruise started off with a bang and this party definitely set the tone for the rest of the adventure. Everyone was excited, well-rested and reuniting with old and new friends. The theme was “Do You” where we represented our “crew”.
OPENING NIGHT Toga Party
We raced to the front of the stage and we were jamming without a care in the world. I felt like I was out on the pool deck for ages, and was sad when the fete ended because I was still ready to keep going. The themes were announced approximately two months before sailing, which helped in outfit shopping. However, the full schedule was sent out only days before sail. The interior cabins are pretty small at only 160 square feet inclusive of the bathroom with no outside light to indicate whether it is night or day.

While everyone else playing all the big island tunes . He came in and started busting all the small island tunes at one of the main event . After his set they’ brought him back to the stage for a round of applause . My thing about performances is that it creates a lot of low moments , and they had like almost every artist from the Caribbean on that ship.
I won’t lie, the crowd energy was low and I think it was because everyone was sooooo tired and concerts require a lot of attention. Plus, we got to witness Bunji Garlin sing Happy birthday to Fay-Ann Lyons which was so sweet. Afterwards we started to get ready for the Bacchanal Ball which was a beautiful display of regal African prints, gowns, suits etc.
A large component of the programming is also the networking and conference offerings that take place. The team always adds in time for passengers to link up, exchange business information and ideas, and to gain knowledge on topics that affect us as a culture. The following year (2017), the team sold out their Cozumel sailing. In 2018, they added an additional sailing, sold out the first, and booked most of the second which took place right after the first.
We eventually left only after we were forced out to accommodate the cleaning crew. We ended the night popping champagne, shuffling between the Promenade and Star Lounge and savoring the last few hours of our time on the ship. Unfortunately, they stopped serving alcohol in preparation of our arrival back in Orlando, and the shock to our systems was a bit severe LOL. Bunji Garlin and Preedy surprised us with their performances as they weren’t scheduled to grace the stage until that evening. Patrick the Hypeman’s energy was as infectious as ever, maintaning the vibes of the crowd, all while getting his hair braided on the stage.
I loved everyone’s costumes especially this really creative Jamaican bobsled team costume; but I don’t think I would do the pre-party again unless it included something in the price and was more organized. The event schedule was sent out a few days before and in the UberSoca Cruise facebook group, people were split between wanting to know the itinerary and not caring about it all. I definitely wanted to know ahead of time instead of having to make split decisions with crews about what they wanted to do and/or attend and also so I didn’t overpack (I brought way too much clothes on the ship). The team had locked in bigger ships to allow even more people to take part in the Ubersoca experience. They were also set to sail for 5-days versus the normal 4 to two exotic locations. Unfortunately, COVID postponed this year’s cruise.
